There is no true black, as there is no true white. All that exists is simply an absence of, or presence of. Nature reflects this perhaps best in autumn—in its ever-changing light; in the shifting warmth and cool; in the very individual shades that ceremoniously erupt on every tree. It is a season of contrasts, strong, yet delicate; graceful, but bold. This same spectrum is starkly demonstrated in the work of French painter Pierre Soulages, and we draw on the same cues here with Chanel's Fall/ Winter collection. In the pages to follow, we explore the multiple complexities, luminosities, and tonal layers of colour—from black, to white, and everything in between.
