If similarities are to be found between horology and aeronautics, they are certainly not coincidental. Precision timekeeping has long been valued in flight and troop operations; mutual influence is only natural. No manufacturer is entangled with aviation quite as deeply as Bell & Ross, whose watches are worn by astronauts and aviators alike. Following the simple adage of ‘form follows function,’ the BR 01 was conceived in 2005. Its square frame, circular dial and typeface translated the functionality of cockpit instruments into the wristwatch format. Over the past decade, the BR 01 has been a platform for creative watchmaking, with over 150 variations in complication, materiality and technological innovation.
This year, Bell & Ross pays tribute to its origins with a limited edition release, the BR 01 10th Anniversary, which retains the shape and design of the 2005 BR 01 while updating its materials. The result is a BR 01 encased in high-tech ceramic, creating a sturdy, comfortable watch. The black of both case and dial contrasts with the minimal numerals, coated in photoluminescent white for maximum legibility. In light of recent Bell & Ross releases, the 2015 BR 01 seems almost simple, but it is a simplicity achieved through sophistication of design. This BR 01 is both reinterpretation and affirmation of the original’s values and innovations. Just as it did in 2005, the BR 01 demonstrates an ever-growing progress in precision watchmaking.
