He flicks cigarette ash while mumbling something under his breath, you briefly register a declaration of love in the subtitles below but nothing could be more revealing than his eyes burning into hers. Everything else becomes the focal point when the language no longer is. Body language, setting, costume and props are all clues that were once sidelined by the main plot. When you consume media in a foreign language you learn to shift your focus onto the little details used to craft a story and appreciate the subtle cultural indicators it reveals. Maybe it’s time to look beyond the limitations of Hollywood for your next popcorn flick.
